CASTING: SEEKING ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER ACTORS FOR THE LOS ANGELES PREMIERE OF VIETGONE

East West Players, the longest-running theater of color in the country, is seeking is seeking Asian & Pacific Islander American actors to play Vietnamese American for VIETGONE by Qui Nguyen.

Synopsis:

An all-American love story about two very new Americans. It’s 1975. Saigon has fallen. He lost his wife. She lost her fiancé. But now in a new land, they just might find each other. Using his uniquely infectious style The New York Times calls “culturally savvy comedy” – and skipping back and forth from the dramatic evacuation of Saigon to the here and now – playwright Qui Nguyen gets up-close-and-personal to tell the story that led to the creation of…Qui Nguyen.

Rehearsals begin Tuesday, Sept 18, 2018.
Technical Rehearsals begin Thursday, October 9, 2018.
Previews begin Thursday, October 18, 2018.
Opening Night is on Thursday, October 25, 2018.
Runs for Four weeks (5 performances a week) through November 25, 2018. Possible Extension TBA.

AEA SPT Cat. 5 Contract ($425 per week plus benefits; contact currently in negotiation). Also seeking non-union performers ($200 honoraria per week plus EMC credit).

Character Breakdown 

QUANG: Male, 20s-40s to play 30s. Asian to play Vietnamese. Must Look and feel Heroic.  (Think Daniel Dae Kim, Harrison Ford, Chris Evans, Idris Elba.)  A leader who doesn’t back down from fighting for what’s right. He has been through a war and shoulders the burdens of responsibility.  Must have a great sense of rhythm and musicality as THIS IS A ROLE THAT RAPS. Stage Combat or movement ability a Plus!

TONG: Female, 20s-40s to play 30. Asian to play Vietnamese. Smart, Fiercely Independent, Sexy, Adventurous. A survivor.  Has suffered loss and lived through a war — profound vulnerability behind a tough façade. Must have a great sense of rhythm and musicality as THIS IS A ROLE THAT RAPS. Stage Combat or movement ability a Plus!

HUONG/FLOWER GIRL/THU/AMERICA GIRL/TRANSLATOR: Female, 25-50, Asian. Plays multiple parts, primarily Huong, Tong’s fierce, funny, and flirtatious mother, and therefore must be a terrific transformational actor with great vocal (speaking) and physical range – comedy and gravitas required. Stage Combat or movement ability a Plus! 

NHAN/KHUE/ASIAN GUY/AMERICAN GUY: Male, 20s-40s, Asian. Plays multiple parts, primarily, Quang’s best friend, Nhan and Khue, Tong’s brother. Sweet, Funny, earnest, loyal. A good guy with a big heart. Transformational actor with range required. Stage Combat or movement ability a Plus! 

PLAYWRIGHT/ GIAI/ BOBBY/ CAPTAIN CHAMBERS/ REDNECK BIKER/ HIPPIE DUDE: Male 20s-40s, Asian to play Vietnamese. Smart, savvy, transformational actor with great physical and vocal (speaking) range to play our narrator, and various antagonists, enemies and allies on our protagonists’ journeys.  Sense of Adventure Humor and Joy a must. Comedy and Gravitas required. Accents and Dialects a plus. Stage Combat or movement ability a Plus!

Callbacks will be July 28.

Preparation – Please prepare two contrasting monologues, one contemporary comedic and one dramatic (each no longer than 1 minute).
