Actors Conservatory

About the Actors Conservatory

Our Actors Conservatory offers a comprehensive theatre arts curriculum for those who are honing their craft as professional actors as well as those seeking personal expression.

Students have ranged in age from 17-65, are of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds, and have skill levels from beginning to advanced. What brings everyone together is the dedication to learning and sharing a unique theatrical experience. Minimum age is 17 with parent or guardian consent.

The History of the Actors Conservatory

Ever since the curtain rose on the EWP stage in 1965, EWP has been nationally recognized for its award-winning presentations of original works, musicals, and classic plays. Through the season, EWP's productions have garnered awards from Theatre L.A. Ovations, Drama-Logue, Back Stage West, L.A. Drama Critics Circle, and L.A. Weekly, for superior playwriting, production, direction, performance, design and choreography. The accolades speak for the theatre companyâs talented pool of artists and their ongoing dedication to hone their craft and search for excellence.

Beyond the achievement of critical success, however, is the underlying goal to serve potential and ongoing students who seek a space that nurtures, challenges and enhances the creative spirit.

The mainstage has been graced by many important new works by Asian American playwrights such as Philip Kan Gotanda, Velina Hasu Houston, David Henry Hwang, Ed Sakamoto, Elizabeth Wong, and Wakako Yamauchi. Notable actors have also performed on the EWP stage such as John Lone, Pat Morita, Mako, Nobu McCarthy, Tsai Chin, Nancy Kwan, BD Wong, Amy Hill and many, many more.

Studio Lab Project

The Studio Lab Project is geared towards conservatory students who have completed at minimum a one year track study with the East West Players Actors Conservatory.  The objective is to give students a “real life” experience by giving them the opportunity to apply theatrical skills they have learned throughout the year in an environment that simulates the professional theatre process.

The instructor/director is in contact with each prospective participant to ensure the level of commitment is understood.  The workshop meets once a week (although added rehearsals are not uncommon as the performance date approaches) and includes script analysis, character exploration and development, voice and speech work and culminates in an evening performance of scenes or one acts selected by the instructor/director.  Friends and families are invited to attend.
