Board Profile
THOMAS E. BACKER, PHD
Thomas E. Backer, PhD is President of the nonprofit
Human Interaction Research Institute, which has conducted research and
provided technical assistance to the nonprofit sector for nearly 50 years.
He also is Associate Clinical Professor of Medical Psychology at UCLA
Medical School. He has been a consultant to many arts and culture
organizations, and served on the Board of Directors of Musical Theatre
Guild and the Multilcultural Music and Arts Foundation. As a psychologist,
he has worked extensively with artists on topics such as stress management
(e.g., five years teaching this subject to film directors at the Directors
Guild of America) and the psychology of performance (e.g., master classes
for opera singers with vocal coaches such as Peter Mark, artistic director
of Virginia Opera). He has taught about the psychology of creativity at
UCLA, North Carolina School of the Arts, Otis College of Art and Design,
California Institute of the Arts and many other academic institutions. He
also has written and produced a dozen educational films, and is twice
winner of the International Rehabilitation Film Festival's First Prize.
