Asians on Film interviews C.S. Lee, Tess Lina, and Kapil Talwalkar–the cast of Animals Out of Paper.
Meher McArthur, Asian art curator, describes origamist Robert J. Lang, his work, and the world of origami in this interview with East West Players. Lang will be a guest speaker at this Sunday’s (9/21) Post Show Discussion immediately following the 2pm performance of “Animals Out of Paper.” The discussion will be moderated by Prince Gomolvilas.
Lang is recognized as one of the leading theorists of the mathematics of origami and applied origami. He has developed ways to algorithmatize the design process for origami and is best known for his complex figures of animals, birds, and bugs.
Commissioned by East West Players, he created the orange origami paper hawk with a 6 ft. wingspan that is used as a prop on-set.
During his writing and researching process, “Animals Out of Paper” playwright Rajiv Joseph met Lang at Origami USA’s National Origami Convention in June 2007 and was inspired by him. Ilana, the main character, is based heavily on Lang and his work in finding real-world applications using origami.
Come for the performance and stay for the fascinating discussion with Robert J. Lang, along with the cast of “Animals Out of Paper!”
Go behind-the-scenes as EWP Production Manager Andy Lowe reveals “The Hawk,” created by physicist and foremost origami artist & theorist Robert J. Lang for Pulitzer Prize Finalist Rajiv Joseph’s Animals Out of Paper.
The character of “Ilana,” played by Tess Lina, is a professional origami artist whose work is based heavily on Lang’s real-world applications of origami to engineering problems. See this specially commissioned piece, with a 6 ft wingspan, at East West Players’ preview week beginning tomorrow! And save the date for Sunday, September 21, as Robert J.
